Parcel distribution

Support for a package delivery service. Web and WAP portals for client access, and a windows application for employees. Distributed over geographically dispersed locations.

This system's centerpiece is a distributed windows application with which employees can control every aspect of the packet distribution process, from service request (received via web, wap or telephone) to delivery, possibly with several transport stages (for distant locations), utilizing warehouse facilities. Packages can be grouped into shipments for cost-effective transport.

Also present is a special event tracking mechanism which automatically logs standard events (booking for transport, departure, arrival etc.) but also allows recording of unplanned incidents that happen en-route. The customers can track their shipments via web or wap, viewing events marked as "public".

To reduce the licensing cost of having multiple distribution points, the application is developed to support the free MSDE database engine which can be used as a database server in low-traffic locations. A separate application uses dial-up connections to replicate neccessary data between servers, quickly bringing all locations up-to-date.
